Graphic Novels...

Happy November friends! Wow, where did the year go? I'm asking that question very tongue and cheek. I know this has been a long year that has flown by. What an extraordinary paradox! But here we are in the month of November and I wanted to share a few suggestions for some graphic novels.

Many of the graphic novels I've come across recently have children as the intended audience. However, the audience for graphic novels ranges from easy readers to adults, and the choices are limitless.

A word to adults that are not fans of graphic novels and who have autonomy over what the children in your care read: Please do not discourage the children from reading graphic novels. They are real books with real storylines and plots and character development. They may not be the best choice for school assignments, but they still count as reading and furthermore as reading enjoyment. That really is the point mostly, about reading, to learn and enjoy the act or process of it. Graphic novels fit nicely into this narrative for many readers of all ages.

If you are a new reader of graphic novels, please do not overwhelm yourself by going to a comic book shop. Those can be really fun places, but your local library probably has a nice starter collection even in the adult section.

It can be fun to re-read a classic as a graphic novel:

Perhaps you're interested in a bit of history and activism:

Maybe you would enjoy the classic superhero story.

Or maybe you may like to dive into my son's favorite, anime: (which is a whole genre to itself)

The possibles are really endless. There are even non-fiction options. They vary in lengths so you could do a short read, or a long one. Whatever your reading preference, there is probably a graphic novel out there that you would enjoy. Many reference librarians can offer readers advisory for all kinds of subjects in graphic novel form.

Let me know in the comments what you think about graphic novels. TTYL.
